Young's Literal Translation

1 And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, 'I have gotten a man by Jehovah;' 2 and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground. 3 And it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah; 4 and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present, 5 and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen. 6 And Jehovah saith unto Cain, 'Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen? 7 Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.' 8 And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, 'Let us go into the field;' and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.
9 And Jehovah saith unto Cain, 'Where is Abel thy brother?' and he saith, 'I have not known; my brother's keeper -- I?' 10 And He saith, 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

Obama said, "I hear politicians talking about values in an election year. I hear a lot about that. Let me tell you about values. Hard work, personal responsibility - those are values. But looking out for one another. That's a value. The idea that we're all in this together. I am my brother's keeper. I am my sister's keeper. That's a value."
Obama said, "I am my brother's keeper. I am my sister's keeper."  The "brother's keeper" quote comes from the book of Genesis.  But when the entire story is presented, a quite different message comes forth:
"the Hebrew word for "keeper" is what a prison guard does, keeping prisoners in cells.  Abel was a keeper of flocks, not a lamb that needed "keeping."  A "keeper" implies control of a flock of docile, stupid, incompetent, wandering, helpless...sheep.  The only economic function of sheep is to be sheared.  The State has been the "keeper" of the poor for so long that many of them act like caged animals, fed through the bars of their limited freedom, beholden to the State for sustenance."
So the question is, "Is Obama (or his teleprompter) suggesting that we 'keep' our brothers?"  Is being kept what Obama really has in mind?  The verse Obama misquoted asks a question of a liar (Cain knew where his brother was) and a murderer.  To use Cain's reply to God as justification for wealth redistribution is like using the quotation usually attributed to Joseph Stalin -- "You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs" -- to support "change."
A better illustration of care would be the Good Samaritan in the tenth chapter of Luke, but that wouldn't work for Obama because the Samaritan used his own money.
What is saddest is that we in the internet blogosphere can find the biblical reference and its complete meaning, but the MSM cannot or will not.

Rabbi Hillel The Elder (הלל)

The ethic of reciprocity, or 'Golden Rule':

"That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."[3] (Many Critics of Judaism are Ignorant of or Ignore this rule of thumb)

NIV 1 Samuel 8:4-8:22 Traditionally Judges/Israel Demands A King
So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have." But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do.”
Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will do: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”

Hosea 13:16

Webster's Bible Translation

Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

The people of Samaria are guilty as charged because they rebelled against their God. They will be killed in war, their children will be smashed to death, and their pregnant women will be ripped open.

Clarke's Commentary

"Samaria shall become desolate - This was the capital of the Israelitish kingdom. What follows is a simple prophetic declaration of the cruelties which should be exercised upon this hapless people by the Assyrians in the sackage of the city"

Barnes' notes

"Such atrocities were common then"

It was a prophecy of revocation of God's PROTECTION by the CHOICES of the Samarians.

"And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times"

"Be ye afraid of the sword: for the sword will be avenged of wickedness, that ye may know that there is a judgment."

"you should fear the sword yourselves; for wrath will bring punishment by the sword, and then you will know that there is judgment."

Jeremiah 17:9

The King James Bible
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

The Bible in Basic English
The heart is a twisted thing, not to be searched out by man: who is able to have knowledge of it?

"And he hath turned back the heart of fathers to sons, And the heart of sons to their fathers, Before I come and have utterly smitten the land!"

"His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse."

Matthew 1:18 The Nativity Story [Glenn Beck]

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."

Matthew 16:23

Clarke's Commentary on the BibleGet thee behind me, Satan - Υπαγε οπισω μου σατανα. Get behind me, thou adversary.
This is the proper translation of the Hebrew word שטן Satan, from which the Greek word is taken.
Our blessed Lord certainly never designed that men should believe he called Peter, Devil, because he, through erring affection, had wished him to avoid that death which he predicted to himself. This translation, which is literal, takes away that harshness which before appeared in our Lord's words.
Thou art an offense unto me - Σκανδαλον μου ει - Thou art a stumbling-block in my way, to impede me in the accomplishment of the great design.

Thou savourest not - That is, dost not relish, ου φρονεις, or, thou dost not understand or discern the things of God - thou art wholly taken up with the vain thought that my kingdom is of this world.

He who opposes the doctrine of the atonement is an adversary and offense to Christ, though he be as sincere in his profession as Peter himself was. Let us beware of false friendships. Carnal relatives, when listened to, may prove the ruin of those whom, through their mistaken tenderness, they wish to save. When a man is intent on saving his own soul, his adversaries are often those of his own household.
Parable of the Talents
Matthew 25:14-30 (Alternate - Luke 19:12-27)

Matthew 25:14 - Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.Matthew 25:15 - To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey."

(Talents were used as a unit of currency, worth about 6,000 denarii Since a denarius was the usual payment for a day's labour, a talent was roughly the value of twenty years of work by an ordinary person.)

But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on "Agape" ie Christian Love:

Excerpt from Glenn Beck's Morning Prayer and Spiritual Thought 8-25-2010 by Pastor Robbins

"...and we need to not only encourage, but actually demand that our leaders return to sanity and stability and security on the solid rock of unshakable principles in total harmony with the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and the God the Jesus did reveal in the way he lived and treated people, we gotta do that and that's my prayer I believe that's what's in your heart and you know I really caution people that When we love others; Jesus said that, he said, love your enemies, not only your neighbor but your enemies [Matthew 5:43-48; Geneva Bible Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;] but he never said get in bed with em, so we can love others regardless as to where they choose to walk but we don't have to walk in the same darkness we don't have to live in the same defeat and so I feel that God is calling us right now to return to him and he says he'll return to us and I'm praying for that..."

Ephesians 6:10-18  The Whole Armor of God
(King James Version)

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

During the keynote at last year’s American Revival event leading up to the 8.28 Retsoring Honor Rally, Glenn gave a speech discussing what it meant to put on the “armor of God”. Insiders can see the full keynote here.

You desire to know something of my Religion. It is the first time I have been questioned upon it: But I do not take your Curiosity amiss, and shall endeavour in a few Words to gratify it. Here is my Creed: I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe. That He governs it by his Providence. That he ought to be worshipped. That the most acceptable Service we can render to him, is doing Good to his other Children. That the Soul of Man is immortal, and will be treated with Justice in another Life respecting its Conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental Principles of all sound Religion, and I regard them as you do, in whatever Sect I meet with them. As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion as he left them to us, the best the World ever saw, or is likely to see; but I apprehend it has received various corrupting Changes, and I have with most of the present Dissenters in England, some Doubts as to his Divinity: tho' it is a Question I do not dogmatise upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an Opportunity of knowing the Truth with less Trouble. I see no harm however in its being believed, if that Belief has the good Consequence as probably it has, of making his Doctrines more respected and better observed, especially as I do not perceive that the Supreme takes it amiss, by distinguishing the Believers, in his Government of the World, with any particular Marks of his Displeasure. I shall only add respecting myself, that having experienced the Goodness of that Being, in conducting me prosperously thro' a long Life, I have no doubt of its Continuance in the next, tho' without the smallest Conceit of meriting such Goodness.

Money, Greed, and God Synopsis of a Speech by Jay W. Richards
The Piety Myth and the Law of Unintended Consequences
Intentions for a policy bare no relation to the effects of the policy.
FINANCIAL CRISIS

One example is the financial crisis, ; a series of good intentions [affordable housing] that influenced policy over a period of decades, one of which was encouraging private banks to lower their eligibility standards for mortgages, and similarly in ‘govt. sponsored enterprises the semi public/private banks Fannie and Freddy which changed the incentives over the years so that loan officers [who would have acted differently in a free market] made decisions leading to huge numbers of defaults on loans. Yet the Financial Crisis has been blamed on the Free Market.
A Private loan officer who’s bank would be stuck with the loan, unable to offload it, who would be held accountable would act responsibly and hold to fiscally reasonable criteria.
But an Officer with Social and Legal pressure for lax criteria and lending to particular people with bad credit ratings, with no evidence of that they’ll be able to repay the loans; an officer with the opportunity for the loans to be offloaded & divided/securitized, their incentives are entirely different.
This is an example of Market Incentives being subverted for ‘good intentions.
Despite good intentions, in policy we should focus on effects rather than intentions. Good intentions can lead to bad policy, bad intentions can lead to good policy. It simply doesn't matter.
The Greed Myth
“In spite of their natural selfishness and rapacity, [business people] are led by an invisible hand… and thus without intending it, without knowing it, advance the interest of the society…” -Adam Smith
in other words a Free Market Capitalism will channel not only legitimate self interest but also pernicious greed and other vices into socially beneficial outcomes. Saying that “Capitalism Channels Greed” is not the same as saying either that “Greed is Good” or that “Capitalism is Based on Greed”

Holding All Things In Common

New International Version
Acts 2:42-47

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. [this indicates CHARITY which by definition is voluntary] 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Gill's Exposition
Acts 2:44

44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And all that believed were together,.... Not in one place, for no one house could hold them all, their number was now so large [apparently 3,120 at one point]; but they "agreed together", as the Arabic version renders it: all these believers were of one mind and judgment, as to doctrines, they agreed in their sentiments and principles of religion; and they were of one heart and soul, were cordially affected to each other, and mutually were assisting to one another in temporals, as well as in spirituals: and had all things common: that is, their worldly goods, their possessions and estates; no man called anything peculiarly his own; and whatever he had, his brother was welcome to, and might as freely take, and use it, as if it was his own. [Colloquially there are similar precepts amongst Monks, Nuns, and the Amish etc; The idea of a voluntary commune is not against Christian teachings, but the extremes of charity are no common doctrine for all Christians in all times either. Nor especially is involuntary redistribution any doctrine of Christianity but perhaps as something to accept as an outside injustice, to be resisted in spirit]

Gill's Exposition
Acts 2:45

45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
And sold their possessions and goods..... Their houses and lands, their fields and vineyards, their goods, moveable or immoveable:
and parted them to all men; that were of their society, not to others:
as every man had need: the rich sold their estates, and divided them among the poor, or gave them such a portion thereof as their present exigencies required. This was done by Jews, and by Jews only; who, when they embraced the Gospel of Christ, were informed that the destruction of their city, and nation, was at hand; and therefore they sold their estates before hand, and put them to this use; which was necessary to be done, both for the support of the Gospel in Judea, and for the carrying and spreading of it among the Gentiles: but is not to be drawn into a precedent, or an example in after times; nor is ever any such thing proposed to the Christian churches, or exhorted to by any of the apostles.

Creationist Misinterpretations

Myth: That God created the universe in an instant from nothing.

Fact: The Bible says in Isaiah 40:22-26 that not only is the universe expanding "he STRETCHES out the heavens like a tent" but also that the stars are the product of His power or energy.

Myth: That the creative days in Genesis are each 24 hours long.

Fact: The Bible indicates that a day to God is much longer than 24 hours Psalm 90:4 Also the entire six "day" creative period is referred to as a "day" in Gen 2:4

Leviticus 26 was specifically a broken Covenant and Fulfilled Prophecy where the unfaithful brought upon themselves their own doom.

God never declared global Jihad [war] as Muhammad did in his universally abrogating Last Sermon.

[The Crusades were declared by Men in response to Muslim waylaying of Pilgrims]

Yet the two are compared due to a complete ignorance of context.

Martin Luther

Citing Martin Luther as a "Hebrew Scholar" and source of criticizing the Talmud.

While Luther always upheld the Bible as the basis of belief, and while he speaks very highly of Hebrew, which he calls the best, the richest, and at the same time the plainest language, he himself did not go back to the original text; indeed, he admits that he was not a Hebrew scholar, and especially that he knew nothing of Hebrew grammar (ib. lxii. 313)
